Dogs communicate predominately with far less vocals than our barking brethren would have you believe. They form most of their day to day communications with Body Language.
I have watched, trained, handled and rebuilt many dogs throughout my career and from what I can see, the part that many people have missed is EMOTION. How you feel around your dog is highly important in regard to how they feel about YOU.
Your dog is a pack animal. He/She craves stable leadership. If a stable leader cannot be provided, the dog will develop behavioural issues ranging all the way from fear based to over bearing behaviour.
A calm but firm and understanding teacher is all a dog requires. These would reflect as your finest qualities to your dog and would automatically generate respect and in time the obedience, that makes you the Leader. For example; Unreasonable anger makes you look unstable, Embarrassment appears as insecurity and/or avoidance.
Praise and love your dog by all means; but bonding as a “ranked pack member” is what it’s all about. Rules and Discipline must always come before reward (pats, food, toys, etc.). Boundaries and Rules must be established as soon as possible. If a dog is unruly or stubborn they may require consequences. In short; Good behaviour has a Positive Reward and Poor behaviour May be given a Negative Consequence – CALMLY.
Bear in mind that you must educate your dog on what the good and bad behaviours are. They don’t come pre-programmed with 5 basic words because they are a dog. They don’t just grow up to be the well behaved, sit, stay, not chew your stuff, bark, or wreck your yard kind of dogs until you show them how.
Desired behaviours are first marked with a reward, Repeated until the dog understands the task. The reward is substituted and slowly withdrawn until the dog understands that they can also do this behaviour because it pleases you and not just for treats (every time). Once the dog understands the task in full, a consequence may be applied for breaking the rule.
MOST IMPORTANTLY- there is no anger, there is no argument. It’s going to happen because you will it to. If that means you have to get up ten times and get a lead or communication tool, then you’re just going to have to do it – CALMLY and with some DIGNITY because the moment you lose your cool, training is over and you’ve gone backwards.
